Practical Influences ~ Mercury Retrograde

When Mercury is retrograde all types of communication, including listening, speaking, learning, reading, editing, researching, negotiating, selling, and buying are affected. All these areas tend to get scrambled or spin out of control leaving a feeling of confusion and pandemonium for yourself and others around you. Decisions made now will be subject to a great deal of change so this is a poor time to launch any new endeavors as nobody can predict what conditions will be like later.

Mercury retrograde can bring periods of forgetfulness and a loss of feeling centered; you may feel unaware of what is going on around you as you will be reacting to your hurts, your needs and the way you take care of others and not yourself. It may feel like everyone you know has suddenly gone mad and you may find yourself getting into bizarre arguments about nothing at all, being unable to finish sentences or barely even able to form a coherent thought. Romance tends to go haywire, too, during Mercury retrograde periods. Couples tend to create miscommunications that in turn can cause a domino effect of errors. Try not to jump to conclusions, and keep striving for clarity.

Mercury retrograde asks you to move back spiritually. It provides you with a chance to re-examine various areas of your life which may need a little more work, so that you can move forward. Now, more than ever, the time is right to look at things with clear eyes as fresh perspectives are revealed. You may have major breakthroughs, intellectual, emotional or spiritual, during this time so it’s a terrific period in which to tie up loose ends.

Although Mercury retrograde periods can be frustrating, they are often useful too, for they allow a time to reassess, revisit, readdress, redo, and redesign plans. Sometimes you rush along in life without fully considering your basic assumptions or actions. Mercury retrograde allows you to stop, look, listen, and redirect your energies more productively. Mercury also helps you find closure to certain situations.

Reconnecting with old pals and relatives is very common during retrograde periods, and that can be one of the most positive and fun sides of this planet’s retrograde orbit. You can take a trip for pleasure during these periods. Actually, this could be a perfect time to go, for you get away from it all, you might want to travel to a place from your childhood that you loved but haven’t seen in a long time.

This period is best used for re-organizing and reflecting. You look at the world a little differently, through different filters, and can come up with some very important inner revelations. It may be difficult to communicate them under this influence, but not everything needs to be rationalized. Mercury retrograde periods can be times of heightened inner awareness, when meditation, benefiting from keeping a journal, reworking old plans, and reviewing past work are favored. Mercury retrograde is powerful for studies, particularly for returning to old studies or for re-learning or refreshing knowledge in a subject already taken.

It would be a great time to reorganize your files or closets. Pack up clothes you haven’t worn in a while and give them to charity. Polish your shoes and decide which ones need repair, and while you are at it, decide which appliances need to be taken in for repair as well. This is the time for completions; i.e., cleaning up paperwork, paying old debts, doing what you’ve promised that hasn’t been completed or otherwise handling those matters responsibly.
